Add a Little Wicked Magic to Your Music Studies This Month ✨

If you have a Wicked fan in your house, you probably already know every word to “Defying Gravity” (whether you wanted to or not). Now that both Wicked movies are out, plenty of families are falling in love with the music all over again, so I put together a few Wicked music activities to help you turn that enthusiasm into some meaningful music learning at home. My favorite is a free printable listening activity built around Glinda and Elphaba, two very different witches who become the most unlikely of friends.

Meet “Which Witch Sang It?”

This one is simple to set up and a lot of fun. Your child scans the QR code on the printable to pull up a playlist of songs from the musical, and as they listen, they’ll:

  • Decide which witch is singing (Glinda or Elphaba)
  • Reflect on how each song makes them feel
  • Notice the mood, movement, and story inside the music

Along the way, kids start to pick up on something composers do all the time: they use melody, lyrics, and musical expression to show us who a character is. Glinda and Elphaba sound so different from each other, and once your child hears why, they’ll never listen to a musical the same way again.

Why Wicked Music Activities Work So Well for Young Musicians

I’ll be honest, I love any activity that sneaks real musical growth into something kids already enjoy. As your child listens and responds, they’ll be building:

  • Active listening skills
  • Emotional awareness in music
  • An understanding of how music expresses character
  • Confidence talking about what they hear

That last one matters more than you might think. When kids can put words to what they’re hearing, they start playing their own pieces with more intention, too. And if your child is a musical theater fan (or you are, no judgment here), connecting their interests to their learning is one of the easiest wins out there.

Once it’s printed, hand your child some crayons, markers, or stickers and let them decorate their pages for an extra bit of Oz magic. Then press play, listen together, and see who can spot the witch first.
