Unlocking Musical Concepts through Nostalgic Tunes
I believe that music has the power to ignite imagination and inspire creativity. That’s why I’ve curated a series of activities inspired by the beloved songs and story from the Wizard of Oz, using them as a jumping-off point to introduce students to fundamental musical concepts in a fun and engaging way.
When you enroll in my Wizard of Oz camp, you’ll be e-mailed an interactive workbook. Each day contains fun-filled, play-based activities using a combination of videos, podcast episodes and arts/crafts. You can work through the day’s activities at your convenience!
**Day 1: The Power of Musical Storytelling:**
On the first day of our camp, we’ll delve into the enchanting story of the Wizard of Oz and explore the magic of musical storytelling. Students will be introduced to “The Miss Gulch Theme” and learn about the rhythm of quarter notes/ta notes, setting the stage for an exciting musical adventure ahead.
**Day 2: Exploring The Wiz and Half Notes:**
Day two brings a modern twist with The Wiz! We’ll compare and contrast iconic songs like “We’re off to See the Wizard” and “Ease on Down the Road,” while mastering the rhythm of half notes. It’s a toe-tapping journey through the Land of Oz that’s sure to have students singing and dancing along!
**Day 3: Harmonizing Rhythms and Discovering Tempo:**
As we reach the final day of our camp, students will put their newfound rhythm skills to the test by combining quarter note and half note rhythms. They’ll also explore the concept of tempo, discovering the differences between allegro and moderato, before culminating our musical adventure with a heartfelt rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”
