We have a special edition of Member of the Month for you today. If you’ve followed along with these features, you know we normally take time to focus on a student who shows engagement and commitment within Busy Kids Do Piano. Today, however, we are focusing on an adult student, Robyn, who began my Busy Moms Do Piano curriculum.
Robyn is a mother of two; Asher is 7 and Emmett is 5, so she highly qualifies for the “busy” part. She’s only been using the online course for a few months. “I was skeptical about online lessons. I didn’t think I’d be motivated without being in person, but Carly is a fabulous and engaging teacher. The music and exercises are well-curated and progress in difficulty at a great pace.”
Though the classical pieces are her favorite, Robyn has enjoyed many of the songs she’s learned to play in the program. “Mainly, I appreciate how Carly finds beautiful pieces even in the earlier levels.”
In her younger years, Robyn played flute for a time, but then took a long break from musical learning. About 5 years after having her first child, she realized she was desperate for an outlet, to do something just for her own enrichment. Robyn also had significant PTSD from working as a nurse in the ICU during the pandemic. Crochet, yoga, and music all turned out to be healing and grounding for her. And she loves the flexibility of the program, saying, “You can go at your own pace and don’t feel bad if a week or two goes by without practicing.”
It’s so hard, as mothers, to take time to provide for ourselves. But our mental health is at stake. Robyn’s advice is this: “Make [your outlet] a priority and ask for help to find time to do the one thing you love. Then don’t feel guilty, and just enjoy it!” Robyn, what wise advice. Thank you!
Fun facts about Robyn: she’s experienced a 9.0 earthquake, a category 3 hurricane, and an F4 tornado. She and her family moved from the U.S. to Northern Ireland for her husband’s job, and she has a 94-year-old grandmother who still plays piano for her church’s worship service (#goals).
