Musical Advent Calendar: A Free Printable to Make Your Countdown to Christmas Extra Musical

December has a way of sneaking up on me every single year (you’d think after 22 years of teaching piano through the holidays I’d have this down by now, but nope). One minute it’s Thanksgiving leftovers, and the next my kids are asking when we’re putting up the tree. If your house feels the same way, I’ve got something that might help — a free Musical Advent Calendar to count down the days to Christmas together, one song at a time.

I made this because I wanted something for our family that wasn’t another chocolate-a-day countdown (though, no judgment, we do that too) — something that would slow us down just enough to actually listen to music together during a season that tends to rush right past us.

Why Music Belongs in Your Christmas Countdown

There’s something about music during the holidays that just hits different. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s the minor keys sneaking into all those old carols, or maybe it’s just that music has a way of making a house feel warmer. Whatever it is, I wanted to build something that let our family lean into that on purpose, instead of just letting the radio play in the background while we wrap presents.

A few reasons this Musical Advent Calendar has become a favorite in our house:

  • It’s educational without feeling like a lesson. Each day links to a musical activity that introduces your kids to a different piece of holiday music history — composers, traditions, and songs they’ve probably heard a hundred times but never really listened to.
  • It builds anticipation the good kind of way. There’s something about opening a new “door” each day that makes the whole month feel a little more magical, and a little less like a countdown to chaos.
  • It’s something you do together. These aren’t independent worksheets — they’re activities meant for the whole family to gather around, even if it’s just for five minutes before bedtime.

What’s Actually Inside the Calendar

I tried to make this simple enough that you don’t need to prep anything (because let’s be honest, December is not the month for elaborate prep). Here’s what your family will find:

  • Guided listening sessions that introduce your kids to holiday music they may not have heard before, broadening their ears a little each day
  • Podcast episode links from Busy Kids Love Music, where we dig into the stories behind some of the most beloved holiday songs and the composers who wrote them
  • Simple musical games and activities that take almost no setup but create the kind of memory your kids will bring up years from now (“remember when we…”)
