Every month, I love spotlighting some of the wonderful families who are part of the Busy Kids Do Piano community. This September, I’m thrilled to introduce you to two of our students of the month: Selah and Luca. Both of these young musicians attend school at home and have been part of BKDP for less than two years. They’ve already moved far beyond the beginner stage and are seeing exciting growth in their piano learning!
Selah’s Story
When Selah’s parents were looking for a piano program, they hoped to find one that Selah could use at home with a good balance of structure and independence. Busy Kids Do Piano was the perfect fit.
Selah has especially loved learning holiday music to share with her family when they visit. She also enjoys playing simple versions of her favorite hymns. Her piano skills have even deepened her understanding of music for singing!
Parent Testimonial:
“The teaching videos have been wildly helpful! We have 3 kids—2 doing BKDP, and a 3-year-old who attempts the Pre-K lessons because he can’t stand to be left out. Giving the big kids something they can do mostly independently with structure and guidelines and extra help as needed has been crucial to their success.”
When asked what advice they’d share with new families, Selah’s parents offered this encouragement: “Just take it one day at a time. The skills will build even when it seems impossible or slow.”
Luca’s Story
Selah’s and Luca’s family firmly believes that music should be part of every child’s education. After searching for a program that didn’t require a parent to act as the primary teacher, they joined BKDP—and it’s been a wonderful fit for their homeschooling family of five.
Luca was eager to begin piano even before his mom was ready! Motivated by watching his older sister, Selah, he dove into lessons with enthusiasm. One of his favorite things to do is look at his sister’s music and try to figure out how to play more advanced pieces.
Parent Testimonial:
“Luca, motivated by keeping up with his older sister, begged to start piano even before I had planned. He has enjoyed the challenge of doing something with his hands and blossoms. He really enjoys looking at his sister’s music that is out and figuring out how to play the harder stuff. Piano is part of our school day, but that doesn’t always mean it is loved. However, he is wildly motivated to work hard during the week to do a show for the family on Fridays.”
For families just starting their piano journey, Luca’s parents shared this advice: “Even very hyper kids can be successful. Try to make a routine with timers and visual aids to get the habit built, and it will make a huge difference.”
Inspired by Selah and Luca?
These stories are such a beautiful reminder that piano can fit into different family lifestyles—whether it’s part of your homeschooling routine, a way to share music with loved ones during the holidays, or a chance for siblings to inspire one another.
